At present, the primary work of the coating industry is to develop four types of environmentally friendly coatings. Secondly, it will take time to achieve this goal, and solvent-based coatings also occupy a considerable proportion of the transition stage. It is also an important work to replace toxic solvents with efficient and non-toxic solvents. From the concept of sustainable development, the development of renewable organic solvent resources is the third task in front of paint workers. The four types of environmentally friendly coatings that the coatings industry will focus on in the future include:

1, high solid coating

High solids solvent-borne coatings (HSSC) are also known as VOC solvent-borne coatings. The volume (NVV) solids of traditional solvent-borne thermosetting coatings is usually about 25-35%, and some thermoplastic coatings are lower.

There is no uniform definition of high-solid coatings, and there is a formulation in our country that high-solid coatings refer to coatings with solids greater than or equal to 70% when sprayed. Some international references are that the high solids of automotive flash metallic paint (or topcoat base paint) refer to about 45NVV; and for high-pigment primers, the high solids may be 50NVV. This requires that the molecular weight and the average functionality per molecule of the synthetic resin used in the coating should be reduced, and the molecular weight distribution should be narrowed. In this case, it is difficult to keep the function of the coating film unchanged at the same time. Therefore, the development of a new type of cross-linking resin synthesis technology and strict control of the curing conditions of the coating film has become the key to the problem. At the same time, the realization of such coatings is only to reduce the amount of organic solvents.

No. 2, solvent-free coating

The so-called solvent-free coating is an organic solvent called reactive solvent or reactive diluent used in the coating. It can not only dissolve or disperse the film-forming material, but also chemically react with the film-forming material in the film-forming process to form non-volatile components and remain in the film. Since the organic solvent does not overflow during the coating film formation process, the pollution to the environment and the toxicity to the human body are reduced.

The solvent-free products currently used are mainly two-component (two-liquid type) epoxy solvent-free coatings and acrylic light-curing coatings. The development direction of solvent-free coatings is to expand the variety, increase the adaptability to coating methods and develop thin-coated products.

3, water-based coatings

The water is a colorless, transparent, non-toxic and tasteless liquid, and it is rich in resources. Using water instead of an organic solvent as the dispersion medium of the coating resin will undoubtedly completely eliminate the above-mentioned three hazards caused by the use of organic solvents. Therefore, it has become an important product in the development of environment-friendly coatings.

Waterborne coatings can be divided into two categories: latex coatings (Latexcoatings) and water-diluted coatings (water-reducible). At present, the mature latex coating products are mainly used in construction, and the water dilution coating is mainly industrial water-based electrophoretic primer.

Waterborne industrial coatings due to the water-based coatings and the corresponding solvent-based coatings performance compared to the need to improve, the cost is relatively high and the coating environment has specific requirements and other aspects of the impact, so the expansion of products and applications of the scope of work still need to carry out some work.

4. Powder coating (powder coating)

Powder coating theory does not contain any volatile substances, is absolutely zero VOC coating, is one of the key development of environmentally friendly coating products. However, powder coatings are limited in expanding their applications and need to be further improved. For example, its manufacturing cost is high; it needs high temperature baking to form a film; it is difficult to obtain a thin film coating. Due to the paint making process decided by the coating product color difficult; in the irregular surface of the uniform coating of poor. These need further research and development.

Based on the above, the development of the above four types of environmentally friendly coatings is not only the unswerving work direction of China's coatings workers.
