Development Status of Waterborne Industrial Coatings

Waterborne industrial coatings are mainly used in automobiles, railway vehicles, bridges, pipelines, steel structures, containers and other fields. At present, the level of waterborne industrial coatings in China is far behind that in developed countries.

Automotive Coatings

With the rapid development of the automotive industry, the amount of automotive coatings is also increasing. In recent years, the new production lines of domestic automotive coatings are all designed with water-based coatings, and water-based coatings have become the mainstream of automotive coatings. As early as the 1960 s, developed countries such as Europe and the United States have taken the lead in using water-based electrophoretic primers. At present, more than 90% of primers have adopted water-based coatings, 88% of automobile coatings have also adopted water-based technology, and the application of water-based metal flash primer has exceeded 65%.

Railway vehicle coatings

Most of the traditional solvent-based coatings are used in body coating, which contains a large number of organic solvents, which bring inconvenience and potential safety hazards to storage, transportation and construction. At present, China's railway freight car field has successfully applied Huaguang water-based industrial coating to more than 13000 vehicles. After more than 5 years of verification, the products can fully reach the solvent-based product quality standard. The development of water-based coating system for railway passenger cars has also been completed by Huaguang Coating Company, and the on-line test after coating has been started. The localization and water-based process of coatings in the fields of motor cars, high-speed rail and rail transit has also entered the work plan of the railway general.

Water-based container coatings have begun pilot applications in China.

Support of water-based policies and regulations

Since February 1, 2015, a 4% consumption tax on coatings has been levied. In a short period of 4 months, three water-based industrial coating product standards, namely, "Water-based Polyurethane Coatings" HG/T4761-2014, "Water-based Epoxy Resin Anticorrosive Coatings" HG /T4759-2014 and "Water-based Acrylic Resin Coatings" HG/T4758-2014, organized and formulated by the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Coatings and Pigments, have been formally implemented on June 1. The industry believes that the implementation of these standards will be an important milestone in the development of waterborne industrial coatings in China.
